This holiday season we celebrate the birth of a human being so spiritually evolved that he could restore life and health- a man with a mission to teach that we all have within us a universal energy and power that is healing, indestructible and eternal. The historical Jesus entered the world during desperate times when the Jewish people had been enslaved by Rome for nearly a century. They lived with excessive taxation, oppression and violence. He preached a radical doctrine of love, pacifism and internal power. Jesus spoke to the highest capacity of the individuals in the throngs that came to listen and told them that the Kingdom of God was within each one. If they believed they could, he said, they would be able to create healing miracles just as he did.
I was reminded of this internal power when my friend, Betsy, had surgery for breast cancer two days ago. I facilitated hypnosis with her the day before, giving her suggestions for sleeping soundly that night, and for complete relaxation and comfort during the preparatory hours before surgery and throughout the surgery itself. I also reinforced her belief that she would heal quickly following the surgery. Her daughter called that evening to tell me Betsy slept well the previous night and was calm with no anxiety before the surgery and minimal pain following. In fact, she said, she and her mom had spent several hours reassuring another women who was frozen in terror prior to her surgery. Betsy accessed her own inner power to utilize an altered state of consciousness for calmness and faith that the procedure would be smooth and successful. And it was.
We know that patients who are prepared for surgery with hypnosis maintain stable respiration and blood pressure, lose less blood, have fewer infections and complications, less pain, and heal faster than those who do not have hypnosis. They do this because they believe they can. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
We also know, from people like surgeon, Bernie Siegel (Love, Medicine and Miracles), and hundreds of personal stories, that many people heal their illnesses even when doctors have given them a prognosis of death. They simply believed it was possible. I am not suggesting that everyone can and should be able to heal their chronic or terminal illness. I am asserting that we all have much more power within ourselves than we were raised to believe.
* We can use our “Inner Healer” to ease pain and restore health
* We can bring energy to support compassion for ourselves and others
* We can use positive suggestions to enhance our confidence
* We can practice the most prominent strength of resilient people-
Optimism, or bringing a positive outlook to difficult situations.
In this new year, how might you use the power of your mind to create the best life you can imagine? What experiences have you had that demonstrated your own energy medicine? How would you like to consistently access your highest consciousness? You can do this every day through prayer, meditation and contemplation. Give yourself positive suggestions for greater health, wealth, inner peace, and especially, love.
